Reps To Investigate Police And Missing N2.1 billion From Mint Company
A day after it resumed plenary session, the
House of Representatives is geared to commence its series of
investigations as it set up committees to investigate allegations raised
by the Governor of Edo state against the police and the N2.1billion
missing money from the Mint Company.
The Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, had at the launch of new
police code accused the Nigeria Police authority of professional
misconduct and covering up the murder of his personal secretary, Olaitan
Oyerinde.
The motion to investigate the Nigeria Police Force over the murder was presented by Representative Pally Iriase, who noted that the allegations made against the police are serious and contradicts the mission statement of the security agency.
The Joint Committee of Justice and Police Affairs are to investigate the allegations and make appropriate recommendations to the house within 14 days.
The house also resolved to investigate the alleged theft of N2.1 billion from the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company.
The motion was overwhelmingly sponsored by over 50 lawmakers and without a debate the house passed the motion and approved an ad-hoc committee to look into the matter and come up with a report in four weeks.
The Joint Committee on Finance, Custom Excise and Marine was also given 21 days to investigate the factors leading to congestion at the nation’s ports.
This followed a motion sponsored by Rep. Kingsley Chinda who said the congestion is affecting the country’s economy adversely.
