A Spanish judge has opened an investigation into Spain’s Princess Cristina's corruption case involving her husband.

Examining Magistrate Jose Castro said on Friday that he had asked the tax agency for more information about Cristina, daughter of Spain's King Juan Carlos, over tax evasion or money laundering between 2007 and 2010.

Inaki Urdangarin who is married to Princess Cristina, the second of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia's three children, is charged with fraud, tax evasion, falsifying documents and embezzling 6 million euros in public funds as head of the charitable Noos Foundation.

Urdangarin, 45, has already been questioned twice by Castro since the probe began two years ago.

The magistrate said for the investigation to be completed and to show that justice treats all equally, the princess must be questioned.

Urdangarin was a professional handball player. He retired from professional sport in 2000, and went on to study business administration.

King Juan Carlos, has banned Urdangarin from family functions. The investigation into the alleged financial misdeeds has deeply embarrassed the monarchy in a country hard hit by a financial crisis and sky-high unemployment.
